Dear Professor XXX:
Hi, this is Chao Cao, whose UID is 118451091. I am a first year master’s student from Data Science and Analytics program, CMNS department of UMD.
I have always been interested in data science and wish to continue my education in this area. I am wondering if you will recruit new research assistants this semester? I don’t need funding and just want to be a volunteer to do some research about data science or machine learning.
I studied computer science and technology when I was an undergraduate student at Nanjing University of Telecommunication and Post and currently study data science and analytics. I can use python and jupyter notebook. I also have knowledge about Java, C++, and database.
I have participated in some projects during my undergraduate study. I studied data mining and designed a movie recommendation system. In Summer 2021, I was an internship in NETCIA and I helped improve the accuracy of the remote sensing images recognition with KNN algorithm. Last semester, I contributed to a project Covid-Policy-Effectiveness in DATA602 and I am responsible for data gathering, data scraping, and applying kmeans algorithm to prove a hypothesis that states with similar demographic features have similar covid experiences.
And I think your current research topics about distributed computing and machine learning attract me.
I attached my CV to this email. Please let me know if you have openings. Thanks, and hope you have a wonderful day!
Samarth
Dear Professor Catherine,
My name is Samarth Negi and I am a Graduate Student at the Science Academy of UMD, pursuing a degree in Machine Learning.
I am currently working on a state wise covid policy effectiveness metric where I correlate various features of each US state like traffic, covid cases, 911 calls etc. with covid policies being implemented, for my project for my Data Science class. While working on this project, I believe I have developed great interest in the field of public policy and statistical analysis (specifically quantitative effects of public policy).
I feel that covid is one of the first massively documented global phenomena and we have extensive datasets that have been recorded and leveraging machine learning and statistical models can bring up great insights and I would really like to work on this field extensively.
I found your research on the effects of travel measures on covid rates to be really insightful and inline with my research aspirations. If you have any ongoing work or projects in this area, I would love to be involved in its research.
Thanks and Regards
